Postdocs at Yale are organizing to win a union!
There are already thousands of unionized postdocs at institutions including Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, the University of California, Johns Hopkins, the University of Washington, Mount Sinai, and the National Institutes of Health. Now more than ever, Yale postdocs need the rights and protections of a union and a contract. We’re excited to join our unionized colleagues at Yale and at other universities and research institutes across the country in standing up for the value of our work and having a say in our working conditions.
We do work that is essential to Yale’s educational and research mission. We teach and train students. We conduct groundbreaking research. We write grants and work on projects that generate significant revenue for the university. Our diverse skills, training, and backgrounds contribute to Yale’s international prestige and reputation.
Many of us value the intellectual freedom of our positions and appreciate the resources and academic community at Yale. But we also face:
- pay that is not keeping up with the high cost of living in and around New Haven
- a lack of job security that makes it hard to plan for the future and do our best work
- inadequate resources and support for working parents and international scholars
- lack of an independent grievance procedure that leaves us vulnerable to mistreatment
